What is Manuka Honey?
Manuka Honey is a monofloral honey produced in New Zealand from the nectar of the manuka tree.
Manuka Honey is one of the most famous honeys in the world as it is a beautiful, delicious tasting dark colored honey with exceptionally high antioxidant properties.
What is MGO?
A MGO is a trademarked system for testing the level of Methylglyoxal, the compound identified as the active ingredient primarily responsible for the antibacterial action of Manuka Honey. The Discovery that Methyl glyoxal is manuka honey's active ingredient was made by Professor Thomas Henle, head of the Institute of Food Chemistry at the Technical University of Dresden (Germany)
Some honeys (non-Manuka) have no Methylglyoxal content at all or very little amount of 3-8mg/kg. Whereas, New Zealand Manuka honey contains as high as 700mg/kg.
What is difference between UMF and MGO?
UMF and MGO ratings are both used to indicate the antibacterial strength of Manuka Honey.
UMF(Unique Manuka Factor) is the industry standard and has been used widely in New Zealand.
UMF rating of 20+ is equivalent in strength to a 20% solution of phenol.
MGO is only used by Manuka Health New Zealand Ltd when first showed up, but thesedays, other companies are starting to use MGO terms as MGO ratings are more intuitive to see how much actual compounds are in the honey. For example, MGO rating of 400mg/kg means there are 400mg of Methylglyoxal content per kg.
